anyway.........

ITS THE SEVENTH MONTH NOW!!!!!!!!!!! muahahahahaha........

reminds me of those ghost stories spread in chung cheng.....there are tons of them.....haha especially the cca block........but now renovate liao no more cca blk already........-_-.......

hrm but i dun really know alot leh.....too many can't remember......maybe someone can contribute some ghost stories in chung cheng and blog here.....hahaha.....

anyway..........to all the 'pan tang' people out there!!!!!! here are some reminders what NOT to do during the seventh month....!!!!!! please take out your paper and pen and take note!!!!!

during night time....do not shine your torch at trees......heard that this will somehow disturb the 'things' inside them........

don't ever open an umbrella indoor too!!!!! they will follow you!!!!!

and when you are eating....always place the chopsticks on the bowl and not stuck it in the food......

lastly..........if you are a female and have long hair.........

do not wear a white dress and stand by the streets at night......

likedat you scare people sia.

it has been a long time since anyone has been posting here....cos everyone is busy having their exams.........hope that everyone of us gets great results for our mid year examinations........jia you jia you!!!!!!!

hrm think i continue from my last post ba......

eh basically most of the chinese orchestra instrument are made from wood and bamboo.....except for percussion instruments........and i heard that the strings are made from horse tails hair........and the skin of drum is made of skin of cow........

an orchestra is made up of four main big sections.....they are the chui, la, tan, da (吹拉弹打).......chui means wind blowing instruments......example like the flute and suona and etc......they produce high pitch sounds and imitate the sound of birds chirping.........

la means using a bow and create friction with the strings to produce music.......example like the cello and erhu....they produce music that often creates a more moody atmostphere as they gives out low pitch sounds.....erhu is one of the most well known instrument known by the public....

tan means using our fingers and gets in contact with the instrument to produce more soothing music.....eh i oso duno how to describe leh..........duno how to use words to describe.......hrm some examples would be the pipa and ruan and YANGQIN.....

lastly it is the da section......it is made up of percussion instruments....and they produce music that creates a more strong atmostphere....just like that of a battlefield.....

all the four main sections are verrrrry important.....an orchestra would be imperfect without having any one of these sections.......

hope this entry won't bored you.......and hope for those who were never interested in chinese orchestra to get some knowledge about how an orchestra works.......thats all for today.......hehe.....

halo.........hrm.......since being an ex cchmsco member....today i shall blog about cchmsco today.......

cchmsco is set up in 1982.....and we have one instructor for every instrument.......so all together we have 10 over instructors...also....not forgetting our most handsome conductor mr ng boon chai!!!!

after setting up for 24 yrs.....cchmsco now has a total of over 100 members in it and have obtain numerours gold awards for the SYFs.......we have fun and loving seniors and many cute juniors..........so to anyone who is reading this blog......you may want to introduce your younger brothers or sisters to join the cchmsco....it is a big family that welcome all of you!!!!!

lastly......our co nite yesterday was very successful!!!!! for those who missed it may want to purchase the vcd...trust me it is worth watching!!!!

i shall continue on part two to introduce the various instrument that we used in chinese orchestra...more pictures will also be put up too....so stay tuned for part two for my next entry!!!!!!!!!

hrm since now the dumpling festival is still goin on.....today i shall teach you all how to DIY a dumpling!!! recipe provided (found from a website)

now i shall introduce to everyone how to make my favourite nyonya style dumpling!!! suitable for vegetarians too!!!!!

Ingredients
500g glutinous rice, soaked for 2 to 3 hours and drained
3 tbsp split green peas (mung beans), soaked for 1 hour, drained
2 tbsp oil
30 dried bamboo leaves, soaked till soft and cleaned
Hemp strings, soaked Seasoning (A):
1 tbsp salt
1 tsp pepper
2 tbsp oil Filling (finely ground):
5 shallots
3 cloves garlic
1 tbsp galangal
1 tbsp cekur roots Seasoning (B):
2 tbsp coriander powder
1 tbsp pepper
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
2 tbsp light soy sauce
1 tbsp dark soy sauce
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp chicken stock granules
125g candied melon (tung kwa), coarsely chopped
3 tbsp ground peanuts, coarsely chopped
2 dried mushrooms, soaked and finely chopped
2 pandan leaves, cut into 15 pieces of 3cm lengths

Method

Marinate glutinous rice and split green peas with seasoning (A) for 1 to 2 hours. Set aside.

Heat oil in a wok and fry ground ingredients till aromatic. Add mushrooms and stir-fry well.

Stir in candied melon, peanuts and seasoning (B). Fry and stir until well combined.

Dish out and set aside. Fold two bamboo leaves into a cone, put a piece of pandan leaf at the base of the cone, then add one tablespoon of glutinous rice and one tablespoon of filling.

Top up with another tablespoon of glutinous rice. Wrap dumpling into a pyramidal shape and secure with hemp string.

Fill half a deep pot with water, cover, and bring to a boil over medium heat. Add dumplings and boil for 2 to 2 1/2 hours until cooked. Throughout the boiling process, keep topping up the water in the pot with hot water.

Pressure Cooker method: Bring half a pot of water to the boil. Arrange dumplings in layers in the pressure cooker.

Pour boiling water into the pressure cooker to cover the dumplings. Cook over a medium heat until the second ring appears.

Reduce the heat and cook for 40 to 45 minutes. Remove and hang up the dumplings to remove excess water.

today is 6 june 2006 (060606). for the chinese, it is a very good day. there is one chinese idiom 六六大顺 (liu liu da shun), which means that you will do things smoothly. it is a rare date which only occurs once every hundred years. therefore the news has also report that the number of couples that choose to marry today has tripled compare to the rest of this year. with so many '6', they believe that getting married on this day, no matter what things they do, everything will go on smoothly.

most importantly, it is a good day because ITS MY 17th BIRTHDAY TODAY!!!!!! hahax....

hi its zhiyin again....haha....and since my bdae cumin....tdae i shall tell u all what a tradition chinese family do to celebrate their birthday..

during our birthday, our parents will give us eat chang shou mian (a kind of white colour noodle that usually comes with soup). when serve, the noodle must be continuous and long...and length cannot be short...because the chinese believe that if we make the length shorter....the shou xing gong/po will have a shorter lifespan....so why we eat it???? it is to believe to let us live to a longer age....like dat lor....

then also, we will eat shou bao (a kind of bun with a pink layer of skin on the outside and lian rong fillings inside). it comes in various sizes...got big got small...it also represents the shou xing gong/po to live to old age...and be healthy too.....the bun must be steamed then nice.....

halo i am zhiyin!!! the new member of happy cheena friends!!!! i am oso frm chung cheng and classmate of puiboon, yihui and wilson. it has been a long time since anyone blog here...so since its wu yue in the lunar calander now....i shall tell u all more about the dumpling festival!!!!

Many moons ago, in ancient China, patriotic poet and statesman Qu Yuan threw himself into the waters of the Milo River in protest against corruption and injustice. Fishermen, to protect the young idealist's body from being devoured by demons, beat drums and gongs and threw rice into the water as offerings. In memory of this occasion, every year during the period surrounding the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar (the day Qu Yuan drowned himself) Chinese Singaporeans hold dragon boat races and eat dumplings. The races are said to represent the search for his body.The dumplings, or zongzi, little packets of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, are thought to have their origin in the bamboo tubes of rice thrown into the river as offerings. To keep the river dragons from eating them, the packets were tied with brightly-coloured silk threads (which dragons fear).

This blog has been rotting for quite a long time due to the fact that it is Chinese New Year and all three of us are Chinese. 对不起 eh.

During CNY, I'm sure many of us are all eating lots of Chinese dishes that may bring good luck to you. For example, 捞鱼生(lao yu sheng). I think many understand the reason behind for eating this dish, so I shall save my saliva. Another example, eating fish 'cos 年年有余(nian nian you yu), 鱼 and 余 sound alike. Talking about fish, wah! That CNY eve, my family was having reunion dinner at some restaurant, we ordered the 'package' type. One of the dishes include FISH. Some red colour fish la. Then we waited like hell, then they gave us a BLACK colour fish. Then my mummy asked the waiter why is it BLACK instead of RED. Guess what the waiter said? "It FADES colour!" was his reply. -_- Fish also can fade colour one xia. Damn buay song about that dinner. Waited about 30-60mins in between each dishes and we had EIGHT dishes! And the order of the dishes was all jumbled up. Ok, enough of it...

So what had you eaten during this CNY?

公保鸡丁(gong bao ji ding). I personally like this dish quite a lot. There's a story behind this dish. It was this officer in China who liked to put chili in all his food, then think he was very popular, hence, people named this dish after him(many many many many years ago). I suppose this dish can be found in most places in HDB areas. Next time when you dine outside at Coffeeshops, do try this dish.

Dan Dan Mian also known as peddler's hot and spicy noodles. Something like Wan Ton mee? Heeren top storey, next to 77th street, there's a food stall. Think famous for its noodles. I thought it was wanton mee but my friend said it was Kok Kok mee. So I'm very confused. Back to Dan Dan Mian, I think it can be found at a Taiwan stall at Bugis Point. Opposite Parco and next to the famous Duck Rice stall. They sell Smelly Tofu too, so it should be quite distinctive.

Prawns. Think many should have eaten it during CNY or any other days unless you are allergic to prawns. I remember a story about prawns and earthworm. Want to hear? Orh, not interested huh? Alright..

"嫂子卖饺子，实在好吃也!" Dumplings~ Dip it into vinegar with ginger. From China Beijing, I suppose.

Tofu with chicken. N I C E. Easily available in Singapore. Some even come in clay plate.

Dim sum. From Hong Kong? Wah, also shiok ah~

豆浆油条(tou jiang you tiao). Heard of the story about you tiao? It was about this big bad corrupted officer in China long before our time. The civilians got so mad that they deep fried him and his wife together. So that's why you tiao comes in pairs!

to wen wen: i'm pleased to inform you that u've been thru 17 cny! lol~ lets see. u're born in the year dragon ya noe? so it starts from 1989-2005 and this is gonna be ur 18th cny le! waaaah!! lao cok cok!! oh, anyway, i never heard that ang pao muz put under pillow. i onli heard of putting tooth under the pillow. haha.

okie! i shall now continue rolling the ball.

GIRLS LYK CNY! cos it means shopping! woohoo. but do remember: dun buy black clothes. cos black is not an auspicious colour. buy RED! the redder the better!

Well, having gone through CNY(Chinese New Year) for 16 years, I've learnt quite a lot of things about it.

As a Chinese blog in English, let's learn more about CNY. I shall start the ball rolling. *ball rolls onto the road and flattens by an incoming lorry*

Many will know these are 春联(chun lian). But what are they for? My guess is that those are merely for decorations and good luck. LOL.

Do you know why does CNY falls on a different day each year? If you know, I'll give you a 冰糖葫芦(bing tang hu lu) too! The other one for the "Hard word" has yet to be claimed. >.<

AngPao

of 'cos the bigger the better!

"He is a fake AngPao! We are then the real ones!" the 10 AngPao cried in unison.

On the eve of CNY, your parents will probably give you a red packet. It's 压岁钱（ya sui qian) to be placed below your pillow when you sleep. However, you shouldn't be sleeping that night! Not because you'll be busy gambling with your cousins, it's because the longer you stay awake the longer you are hoping your parents' lives to be. Eh? Am I not getting my facts right or what? If you want your parents to live longer, so you don't sleep, then put the angpao there for what? Correct me..

Everytime CNY will gamble with cousins. New game to play this CNY, 'in-between'. BIG MONEY! Or else, blackjack or DaiDee.
